Introduction to Medical Varmalogy for Parents of Special Children in New Delhi

As part of Project Vathsalya Bhavam, Arts Research Institute (ARI) conducted an introduction to medical varmalogy for the benefit of parents of special children in New Delhi on Sunday, the 12th of December 2010. The event, which was held at Sneh Kunj (Home for Spastics) at Dwarka Sector 5, had been organised at the behest of the parents themselves.

For many of the participants, this was the first exposure to the ancient Indian art of medical varmalogy. Many were surprised that they were unaware of the existence of such a vast, well documented, Indian medical system. Several of them expressed their desire to begin using it immediately for the benefit of their special children.

Over the last 3 years, New Delhi branch of Thirumoolar Varmam Research and Therapy Centre (Unit of the Arts Research Institute) has been working quietly to bring relief to many patients in the National Capital Region, including special children suffering from different developmental disorders.

Parents who have been regular with the free, twice-a-week varmam treatment of their children at the centre, have witnessed the positive changes in their offspring and have, in turn, shared these results with other parents.  This Sunday’s introduction to Varmam was conducted in English and Hindi for the benefit of such latter parents.

The session, titled ‘Introduction to Medical Varmology for Parents of Special Children’, was attended by roughly 20 parents and topics covered included the genesis of varmam, its scientific basis, role of Varmam Aasaans (Masters), an overview of the Arts Research Institute’s activities and finally, an exposition on how varmology benefits children with special needs. This was followed by a Q&A Session and the sharing of experiences by a few who had been treated at the New Delhi TVRTC centre.

“Varmalogy is a truly Indian art and we want every Indian to know about and and benefit from it. Varmam treatment has shown promise in treating many types of ailments, from neural disorders to slipped discs to internal organ problems, but we have seen across our 18 treatment centres that varmam has been especially effective with development disorders in children. We would like medical varmalogy to reach as many such children across India as possible, to help speed up their recovery and also provide relief to their parents, ” said Dr. S.Yoganathan, M.S.(Ortho), President, Thirmuoolar Varmam Research and Therapy Centre, Unit of Arts Research Institute .

ARI plans to conduct many more such events in the future to spread awareness of Indian medical varmalogy across the country.
